A general rule of thumb
When in doubt, check your bill for a service charge before tipping again on top of it — many countries outside North America already build service into the price or the bill. Carrying small local-currency notes makes tipping easier everywhere, since card tipping isn't universal.
On currency
Notify your bank of travel dates in advance, carry at least one backup payment method, and avoid airport currency exchange counters where possible — their rates are usually the worst available. A no-foreign-transaction-fee card or a travel money app typically beats cash exchange for most spending.
